Our Story

Inspired by a kinetic sculpture made of metal rings, John had a hunch that the mix of addressable LEDs and reflective materials might produce some curious results. After rushing Ring Theory into existence in the final hours before Burning Man 2017, the effect turned out to be spectacular!

An embroidery hoop, 12V electronics, and some scraps of pipe insulation, formed the shoddy backbone of the original prototype.

After tossing out the embroidery hoop and pipe insulation of the original design, a sleeker Ring Theory was born!

Burning Man 2018

Of course, when life drops a new and bizarre piece of art in your lap, what else can be done but to turn into a Burning Man project? In February 2018, Ring Theory was selected to be an honorarium project for the event later that year. Learn more about that adventure at our dedicated page!

2018 and Beyond

By the conclusion of the Burning Man installation, our team had found homes for all but two of the original 40 pieces! Inspired by this success, Rainbow Girl and John continued building hoops in their most popular and fun size. Kicking off the first build in December 2018, we finished up 30 more hoops by late January 2019. The new production has been accompanied by design improvements, and stands are also making their debut! Ring Theory Arts will continue integrating novel materials and methods in future runs, as well as exploring other sizing options.
